County Announces the Winners of Recycling Coloring Book Contest

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and the County’s Recycling Division are proud to announce the winners of the 2009 Recycling Coloring Book Contest. Sponsored by the Bureau of Environmental Services Recycling Division, the purpose of the coloring book contest was to promote the idea of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and to encourage County 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to express their ideas through art. The contest was open to all County elementary schools and each entry was judged on creativity, originality and appropriateness for a coloring book.

“We have some amazingly talented students in Howard County who are also very dedicated to making our earth a cleaner, healthier place to live,” said County Executive Ulman. “They practice the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) at school and at home and are doing their part to help protect the environment. I want to thank everyone who participated in the contest and congratulate the winners.”

Winners include: Claire Engelhaupt, Alan Gorny and Emma Keller from Ilchester Elementary School; Julia Bohse, Christina Dee, Madeleine Ho, Nina Talbot, Diana Shin and Faith Leslie from Longfellow Elementary School; Emily Magoon and Garrett Peach from Rockburn Elementary School; and Jennifer Benavides, Avalon Ferman and Kailey Ramsing from Swansfield Elementary School. The drawing selected for the cover was created by Avalon Ferman.

Coloring books are available for free from the Bureau of Environmental Services, Recycling Division at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 514, Columbia and will also be available at select public events throughout the County.
